The Challenge

Our client wanted to bring the thrill of orienteering into the digital age but faced a unique set of constraints: unstable GPS in remote terrain causing up to 10 m drift, a wide range of device capabilities from flagship iPhones to budget Androids, intermittent connectivity requiring seamless data sync upon reconnection, and a tight 3-month deadline to deliver an MVP ahead of the summer season while architecting for an 18-month rollout.

We engineered a robust, cross-platform ecosystem: integrated a Kalman filter and map-matching algorithm on a Java backend (AWS ECS + PostGIS) to reduce GPS error below 2 m; built custom Flutter plugins bridging ARCore & ARKit with optimized shaders and S3/CDN asset streaming for sub-500 ms AR object loads; implemented an offline-first architecture with local SQLite caching and delta-sync via AWS IoT Core;
